The primary goal of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) is to help individuals struggling with alcohol addiction achieve and maintain sobriety through mutual support and the practice of the Twelve Steps.

Primary Purpose

  • Achieve Sobriety: The foremost goal of AA is to assist its members in achieving sobriety. This is accomplished through shared experiences, support, and the application of the Twelve Steps, which provide a framework for recovery

  • Help Others: Another significant goal is to help other alcoholics who are still suffering. This is encapsulated in Tradition Five, which states that each group has but one primary purpose—to carry its message to the alcoholic who still suffers. Members are encouraged to share their experiences and support one another in their recovery journeys.

Principles of AA

  • Twelve Steps: The Twelve Steps of AA are spiritual principles that guide members in their recovery process. They emphasize self-reflection, accountability, and the importance of a supportive community. The steps encourage individuals to admit their powerlessness over alcohol, seek help from a higher power, and make amends for past wrongs .

  • Unity and Support: AA fosters a sense of community among its members, providing a safe space for individuals to share their struggles and successes. This support network is crucial for maintaining sobriety and preventing relapse .

Non-Discrimination and Inclusivity

  • Open Membership: AA is open to anyone who has a desire to stop drinking, regardless of age, background, or previous experiences with treatment. There are no dues or fees, and the organization is not affiliated with any religious or political groups

In summary, the goals of Alcoholics Anonymous revolve around helping individuals achieve sobriety, supporting one another through shared experiences, and maintaining a focus on the principles outlined in the Twelve Steps. This approach has helped countless individuals find recovery and rebuild their lives.
